International Mud Day is June 29

International Mud Day is June 29
What Will You Do To Celebrate?

There is a celebration for everything and mud is no exception.   Just looking at mud seems to bring back childhood memories.  The cool, wet and squishy feeling between our fingers and toes makes us enjoy being part of the natural world.  So it’s only right to have a whole day dedicated to having fun in the mud.

Here are some Mud Day activities everyone will love:

Mud Painting – Painting with mud can be done many ways.  You can use brushes, your hands, your feet, leaves or sticks.  You can paint on slate, an easel with paper or even your body.

Mud Sculpting – This can be done indoors or outside on a table. You can even sculpt on the grass using trays.  Just get buckets full of mud, some sticks, leaves, rocks, pipe cleaners or other materials and create a mud masterpiece.

Mud Olympics – The possibilities are endless for mud games that are appropriate for both adults and children.    Here are a few:

            Mud Tug of War
            Mud Relay Races
            Mud Obstacle Courses

Mud Puddle Jumping – The kids just love this one.  Once they see someone get splashed with a muddy mess, they will splash in the puddles for hours.

Mud Swimming – Swim in a big mud puddle.  For a great Mud Day activity that has two fun steps, get a blow up pool and have the kids make the mud by adding dirt and water in the pool. Then the kids can swim in the mud pool they created.

Mud Dig and Find – Place items in the mud ahead of time and have the children dig through it to them.  If they are digging in a natural mud spot, they might find more than what you put in there.

Mud Prints – Make footprints and handprints in the mud.  Let them dry out so you have a mold of your hands and feet.  Making prints of your pet’s paws is fun also.  Toy cars, animals or cookie cutters can also be used to make different prints in the mud.

Read Mud Books – There are a lot of books about mud and mud activities.  Here are a few:

            Mud Tacos by Mario Lopez
Stuck In the Mud by Jane Clarke
            Mud Puddle by Robert Munsch

Mud Slides – (No, not the drink, but those are a great idea for adults on Mud Day!) Just about every kid loves a slide.  Make a mud slide by laying out a long tarp and covering it with mud.  Putting the slide end of one of those heavy duty plastic children’s slides into a huge blow up pool filled with mud will work also.

Play In The Mud – Play and explore the old fashioned way.  Just get right into a pile of mud and play.  Have some spoons, shovels, cups, buckets, pails, pots, rolling pins and just about anything you want to use to enhance the fun.  You might also want to have a magnifying glass and a critter container on hand in case you find anything you want to get a better look at.

I know what you are thinking.  This is going to be a big mess and a lot to clean up.  You are right.  It will be.  But along with the mess you will have a lot of fun and a lifetime of memories.
